Pierre d'aimant utilisé comme boussole dans l'antiquité

The history of permanent magnets begins in antiquity with the “magnet stone” which is a natural magnet: a variety of magnetite Fe304. It was in China, and soon after in Greece, that men discovered this black stone. It is said that the Chinese used it as a compass long before our era, and its power to attract iron was used by many entertainers and charlatans. During this time, sailors used it to magnetize compass needles by contacting the “magnet stone” with iron. About two centuries later, the compass appeared in Europe.

The first book on magnets, “De Magnete” by W.GILBERT, appeared in 1600. It was the first book on experimental physics published in England. It presents an analysis of the work and research on the magnetism of natural and artificial magnets carried out during more than twenty years. Numerous experiments lead him to add polar pieces to the “magnet stone” and to try to create artificial magnets: by contact of iron with the “magnet stone”, by forging iron parallel to the earth’s field, or by cooling red-hot iron bars directed according to the earth’s field. “De Magnete” also presents the first notions about electricity.

Improvements to the magnetization process were made by KNIGHT G., in the 18th century, as well as by J. CANTON, J. MICHELL, du HAMEL, AEPINUS, who grouped together several long steel rods connected at the ends by soft iron pieces.

From the middle of the 18th century until the beginning of the 1900s, England was the country with the main source of knowledge of magnetic materials. Thereafter, the role of English researchers gradually diminished in favor of new developments from Japan, Germany, the Netherlands and the United States.

The discovery by ŒRSTED, in 1820, of the magnetic field associated with an electric current marked a halt to work on magnets. In an experiment he performed for his students, he demonstrated that a wire carrying an electric current was able to deflect the magnetic needle of a compass.  However, the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century saw the appearance of certain magnetic alloys based on non-magnetic elements (copper, manganese and aluminum alloys), a discovery that will be very important for the future when we want to develop a theory of magnetism.  In 1873, J.-J. JAMIN made a powerful horseshoe magnet, weighing 50 kg, which could lift a load of 500 kg.

Louis Néel, physicien à l'origine des découvertes de l'antiferromagnétisme et du ferrimagnétisme

At the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, the manufacture of more sophisticated materials began: HEUSLER alloys, carbon, chrome, tungsten and cobalt steels. At the same time, the first attempts to explain magnetism appeared with the names of the Frenchmen P. CURIE, P. LANGEVIN, P. WEISS, founders of the world-renowned French School of Magnetism. This school, directed for twenty-five years by Professor Louis NEEL, has to its credit several resounding discoveries, both practical and theoretical.

In the history of permanent magnets, the turning point came in 1931, with the discovery by the Japanese scientist MISHIMA of iron-nickel-aluminum alloys (known as Alni materials). This discovery was to revolutionize the field of magnets and was the basis for the prodigious development and growth of permanent magnets.

The addition of cobalt to the Mishima system by G.B. Jonas in 1939 led to the development of alloys known today as Alnicos. Among the contributors to the development of magnets, we can mention D.G. Ebeling in the United States, M. McCraig in England, and in the Netherlands A.J. Koch, M.G. Syag and K.J. de Voss (complete isothermal treatment) and H. Howe (sintering process).

Since the introduction of Alni materials, the pace of development of new materials accelerated rapidly during the 1950s, particularly with the emergence of Ferrite magnets.

The most recent advance in magnetic materials was the introduction of a new class of magnets based on rare earths, specifically samarium and cerium. In 1968, the Raytheon Company began offering a samarium-cobalt magnet. This material has about twice the maximum energy capacity of Alnicos and six times that of Ferrites. Although rare earth materials have good technical characteristics, they have not been used much due to their high cost.

Thus, the history of permanent magnets has been based on the extensive research of many researchers and engineers whose role has been to apply the available magnetic materials.

As part of the Melodium 42B reconstruction project, Euromag supplied the 4 AlNiCo magnets that make up the microphone. Modernised and optimised, the emblematic microphone manufactured in the 1940s is making a comeback.

It was in Paris, in the early 1940s, that the MELODIUM 42B was born. Initially designed and manufactured by the engineer and inventor Charles Boutelleau and his associate Emile Furn, this AlNiCo magnet tape microphone is the largest ever built.

The tape technology combined with the power and stability of the magnetic field of ALNICO magnets gives it a unique sound quality. Thanks to the integration of its 4 AlNiCo magnets, the MELODIUM 42B produces a soft and warm sound thanks to a specific step-up transformer designed to adapt the impedance, that is the total resistance of the cable to the electric current flowing through it.

Unlike some microphones that use neodymium technology, the 42B uses AlNiCo 600 magnets, which allow it to retain its distinctive sound.

The Melodium® brand, which had been discontinued for years, was acquired by the Kerwax studio. The studio’s experts worked hard to break down the original model and improve its successor: the Melodium 42Bn (the ‘n’ standing for ‘new’). The new model now incorporates a custom-wound transformer with a higher output impedance. The passive filter has been removed and the overall mechanical construction improved.

The team of experts at Kerwax have trusted us to revive this legendary microphone! Euromag is proud to have supplied the 4 ALNICO 600 magnets that equip the microphone as well as the magnetization and control of the magnetic circuit.

Kerwax has chosen an ethical manufacturing process. From the microphone to the wooden box, all the elements have been designed and handcrafted by French artisans and companies, respecting ecological and sustainable practices. Made of less than 1% plastic, the microphone and its accessories are 100% recyclable. A true object of craftsmanship recreated for the 21st century, the MELODIUM 42Bn combines a vintage aesthetic with the needs of modern studios.

For more details, please visit the MELODIUM website or the KERWAX studio website.

After several months of work, we are proud to present our new graphic identity, accompanied by a new website!

A new visual identity

20 years already! The opportunity for us to modernise our image in order to give a new impulse to the values that we wish to continue to share with you.

Without forgetting the past and using our experience as a supoprt, between age-old know-how and innovation, this new branding is an opportunity for us to reassert the ideas that drive us on a daily basis.

We wish to highlight our flexibility, our sense of service and our desire for dialogue through this graphic renewal so that they remain the fundamental foundations of our relationship with our customers.

150 years of history have shaped our expertise in magnetism and permanent magnets. Although the natural erosion of time has rounded and lengthened the typography of the corporate identity, our passion remains no less strong and solidly anchored in the present, as indicated by the bipolar structure of the logotype.

We continue to assert our desire to be a quality industrial player in the magnet industry through our foundry, whose melting metal will continue to illuminate our new logo with an orange colour for a long time to come.

Attentive to the needs of our customers, we wish to continue to create a real feeling of proximity and to help them at any stages of their project. The purplish-blue of our typography thus symbolises in this way an innovative and personalised approach to the solutions we offer.

Finally, we reaffirm our desire to be a reference player in a highly globalised permanent magnet market that is open to the world, as suggested by the central element of the logo, which evokes roundness and envelopment.

A completely redesigned website

This new visual identity is already being applied to all our communication tools, and first and foremost to our new website. Keeping in mind our values and our know-how, we have designed a new interface to our image. A refined design, figures recalling the central element of our logo and dynamic colours dress our new web pages.

The new site offers a more fluid and pleasant navigation for Internet users. The ergonomics have been completely rethought so that you can access information easily and quickly. The information is now divided into two menus. A “company/institutional” section and a main menu in which you will find technical information, information about our know-how and our products.

Business expertise, personalisation and proximity are the key words of our new universe.

And as a good news never comes alone, we invite you to meet us at the end of the year for an exclusive new feature…

The Euromag team.
